The Story Of the
Traveling Glasses©

It’s
Christmas time, 2004, and I am wandering around
one of my favorite shops trying to find that
special gift for one of my girlfriends. I see a
beautiful jeweled wine glass that has caught my
eye in the past, and think how different this
glass of large multi-colored blue jewels would
be to have. At that point, I decided the glass
would be perfect for my friend Paulette,
sometimes known as “Louise”.
The
next month, I was again at my favorite shop, and
lo and behold, two of these glasses were on the
shelf. I gave one to my girlfriend Inga, for her
birthday and kept one for myself, “Thelma”
of course.
Over
the next several months I found three more
glasses. Perfect for Tammy B., Tammy P., and
Terry P. so, I bought them all!
Our
group of girlfriends get together in different
numbers, several times a month for one reason or
another, and many times during the year for
birthdays, holidays, and local events, and
simply because we love doing things together. I
thought: how cool would it be for each of us to
have one of these unique glasses.
Little
did I know at that time, my girlfriends and I
would create a tradition, that would grow into The
Sisterhood of the Traveling Glasses©.
I
soon found more glasses to add to the
collection. Tammy P. happened to be celebrating
her birthday so the group met for dinner at one
of our favorite restaurants. I took this
opportunity to present her, as well as Tammy B.
and Terry P. with their glass. That was the day
the glasses began to travel! A few weeks
later we presented a glass to Debbie at her baby
shower. Again the glasses traveled.
Finally,
in November 2006 I had found glasses for all of
the girls. In December, one of the girls
had a special birthday and everyone arrived at
her party with their glass in hand. The birthday
girl, Terri C., commented how she had seen us
with the glasses before, and how cool she
thought they were. Little did she know, I was
about to present her and our girlfriend Andrea
with their own Traveling GlassÓ,
inducting them into what we began to call “The
Sisterhood Of the Traveling GlassesÓ”.
I told the story above in more detail as to how
each of the girls had received their glass. You
could hear a pin drop. Everyone in the room was
captivated by the story, and our special
friendship.
That
night, several girls at the party asked where
they could buy their own Traveling Glass©
and commented how great the idea was. They
suggested I share this tradition with
girlfriends everywhere. It was at that time,
that I was inspired to develop TravelingGlasses.com
where girlfriends around the world can create
their own traditions, and share their stories. I
began a mission to find the perfect wine,
martini, margarita and champagne glasses that
would reflect our many different personalities.
Then designed a wine charm that would signify
the sisterhood.
Our
group has continued to grow and I have since
purchased glasses for my daughters and my mom,
who is 66 years old and loves to hang out with
us. I see this tradition continuing to grow with
our families, college sisters, brides and
bridesmaids, and friends around the world.
Looking
ahead I picture my friends and I handing these
glasses down to our daughters and even
granddaughters. If only these glasses could
talk! Imagine the stories they could tell about
the places they have been and the friendships
they’ve grown with over the years.
Since
2004, our glasses have traveled to several
states on girls weekends, as well as tons of
restaurants throughout Virginia. We are always
asked, “Where can we get one of those
glasses”? We now have the answer to that
question.
